1. Communicate Your Style
Message your photographer with examples of locations you like, poses, how many people will be attending, etc. Some things to consider: Do all of the images you like on Pinterest have a flowy dresses? Are you more of a city person or do you want shots in nature? Will your older kids be attending? This is all great information to talk to your photographer about after booking your shoot! It's never a bad idea to send over your Pinterest favorites for poses you would like to replicate too!
2. Weather Conscious
January in Wisconsin is not so forgiving, its a good idea to plan on a long dress, with longer sleeves, a fur wrap, and copious amounts of leggings and warm socks and boots! If you don't want your boots showing in shots, try to pick a dress with a bit of a train. Amazon and Sew Trendy have thousands of options to choose from for longer dresses! In the summer months, shorter sleeves are a great go to, also plan on sensible shoes and water bottles just in case!
3. Bathroom breaks beforehand
While it's no sweat if you are near a bathroom at the time of your session and you got to go, sometimes in the woodsy areas, there aren't bathrooms nearby, and running to the nearest gas station can cut into your session time quite a bit. Try to make it a priority to have your littles go before the session, and you before you get all dolled up in your dress!
4. Hair & Makeup
You don't need to have a professional hair and make up artist, but it doesn't hurt to look around! Even if its just a friend to do your hair, it takes one more thing off of your plate to get ready before the session. And gives you time to relax and prepare for gorgeous photos without stressing that you missed a curl in the way back!
5. Prep Your S/O
The idea of a photo session can be stressful, especially if your significant other isn't use to having them done. Make sure to give them plenty of heads up, run through the plan for the day, coordinate times and work schedules as early as possible! The day of it doesn't hurt to hype up your partner with compliments, date ideas for after the session, and lots of affection. A "You look stunning" can go a long way for setting the sessions tone.
